Healthy Dessert Ingredient Alternatives

I love desserts!! I have a sweet tooth, desserts are part of the things that I enjoy the most in life. I love traditional desserts; grandma's recipes are the best. I can never decide what my absolute favorite dessert is. When I go out to dinner, I always order desserts to share because I truly love trying new flavors, especially in French pastry shops. I do this occasionally because life is all about balance, occasionally eating any food won’t have to affect your health or your weight (unless you suffer from a medical condition). When I want to eat desserts on a more daily basis, I try to prepare them myself, in addition to being fun, I able to know the quality and the type of ingredients that I use. There are good ingredient replacements that allow our desserts to be much healthier... here are some of the absolute favorites:

How to replace traditional flour?

Use 1/3 cup coconut flour and 2 egg whites (for a vegan alternative, you can substitute the egg whites with Aquafaba). Coconut flour contains many properties that will allow you to feel more satiated because it is rich in fiber, protein, and good fats. Another benefit is that you should use much less coconut flour than traditional flour.

How to substitute the egg to make a recipe vegan?

If for some reason you don't want to add an egg to your recipe, you can substitute 1 teaspoon of chia soaked in a cup of water for 15 minutes.

How to replace butter?

Replace the butter with the same amount of mashed avocado, it is very common to use this replacement in recipes like brownies, and DO NOT worry, your brownie will not taste like a salad.

How to replace sugar?

If you want to replace traditional sugar (essentially refined sugar isn’t the healthiest for you anyway) there are several options:
If it is for a personal sized or small dessert, you can use it with vanilla and cinnamon essentials. Make sure that in this recipe the sugar does not fulfill the function of giving consistency to the dough, this substitution could work for example for a mug cake.

If you are looking to substitute sugar in the recipe, a good alternative would be applesauce, its consistency and flavor are an excellent combination.

Stevia and monk fruit are also usually good substitutes. Also, both are of natural origin. Make sure to check their ingredients, check to see that they only contain monk fruit or stevia, and be careful with the quantities because they tend to be sweeter than sugar.

How to substitute cream cheese?

When you want to bake recipes that include cream cheese, you can substitute it for Greek yogurt, besides being creamy and delicious, it provides a good amount of protein per serving and a reduced amount of carbohydrates.

Add vegetables to your desserts: one way to add juiciness to our preparations is to add grated vegetables, make sure that they have drained the water they previously contain, in some recipes they serve as a replacement for oil or butter. Some delicious desserts that you can make are zucchini brownies or carrot cake.

Substitute milk for a vegan version of your desserts: milk can easily be substituted with milk alternatives such as almond, soy, oatmeal, or rice milk.

Now that you know these substitutions, you can start preparing your desserts at home! Besides adding health to them, it could be a fun family plan.
